bonniegrrl, posting in craftgrrl @ 12:32 pm: General Grievous Finger Puppet Craft

I always enjoy making puppets. Perhaps it's the kid in me who never grew up. I secretly wanted to get lost on Sesame Street and stay there. In fact, my mom used to wake me up as a child with a Kermit puppet so I imagine that's why I'm drawn to making toys that have a bit more life in them.

The more puppets I make for Starwars.com, the more I realize that at some point I need to put on a puppet show. Maybe like Punch & Princess Leia? Perhaps if I can get enough of you to make Star Wars puppets, we can do a flash mob puppet show at Comic-Con? Who's in?

Either way, I hope you crafty kids, Star Wars fans and amateur puppeteers out there have fun with my latest craft!

Can anyone direct me to a site or instructions on making no slip hair clips? I'd like to make some for my daughters, but everything I'm coming across is books/DVDs you have to purchase or instructions that aren't very detailed or don't include pictures. TIA!

I crafted this Tree of Life pendant from recycled sterling silver wire, a faceted garnet bead, and love. Can you see the word "Love" in its branches? The next tree that I make like this will have an E with its own set of branches (rather than joined with the V), and I also need to do a better job with the O:

Next: a sun, an owl, and a tree bracelet... )

xdeadlyalivex, posting in craftgrrl @ 11:41 am: Trouble with sewing machine :[
I was looking around on here to see if I can find what I'm searching for. I was hoping one of you guys can help me before I have to google full force and dig deep for my manual book.

I just got my sewing machine out.
I started working on my project and it was sewing ok until it "tensed" up.
The needle stalls now going in and out of the fabric.
I don't know how to fix this. I haven't sewn in ages and I can't remember if this happened to me before and what I had to do to fix it.

I really need help figuring this out please. I've been pushing this project off for a bit as I've been trying to fight off this cold.
But the project is coming up fast. :[
Help! Please?

Thank you!

I was having a terrible time looking for a tutorial online for this (the one from HGTV is TERRIBLE), and a friend of mine helped me find a couple. This one was helpful for figuring out the sides. I figured out a lot of the rest on my own, and the top flaps are my own design.

I did the sides in vinyl, which kind of worked. I used about a fat quarter's worth of fabric for the lining. It turned out a little wonky, but I think that's because of the vinyl sides. Oh well, I know for next time.

Yup, It was my day off, and I got a lot done.

bibliogrrl, posting in craftgrrl @ 01:50 pm: Card box for a shower/wedding
Hi all!

So my sister is getting married in a couple of months. I'm not in the wedding (*whew* I've been in ENOUGH weddings already. :D ) but stated that anything they wanted me to do I'd be happy to do.

Her Maid Of Honor (known as the MoH, she's awesome) called and asked if I would like to make a card box for the bridal shower and wedding. I was completely stoked to do it.

I originally was going to make a sewn bag, to stretch over some sort of a frame, as sewing is normally my forte. But I was having trouble trying to make that work.

And then I found the kraft paper boxes at Joann.

The only guide from the MoH and my sister was to use the color scheme from the invitations. This is what I came up with:

Some wristwarmers made out of sock yarn and crocheted tightly. They should be warm without being bulky.

And a beret from self patterning yarn.

I got to work with my garden last night.

squiguana, posting in eurotravel @ 01:57 am: Italy in Easter??? Or not..
Hi guys -- just a quick question! Would people recommend going to Italy in the spring (around March/April) for a brief time or is it more worth it going to Italy in the summer (brighter, sunnier, etc, but also chockablock full of tourists!) for a longer time?? I am seriously inclined to think the latter, because although it would be nice to escape the tourist queues and large crowds, I think it would be nicer to do a lot of Italy than just small bits, in the larger spacer of time. However peoples' suggestions and opinions would mean a lot to me on this -- what do you think??? I just don't know much about what Italy is like in the summer/spring, whether one is glaringly better a time than the other, etc. (As far as cities go the main ones are Venice, Rome, Florence, Naples, etc.)

A closer look )

I want to avoid jump rings if possible. I also want to avoid metal clasps. Any advice on how to close/tie the necklace without a metal clasp but still have it look nice? And, a pastel-colored silk cord would look best as the chain, I think. Do you have any other suggestions for a chain?

+4 pictures )

The tin is just a 2 3/4 inches in diameter and one inch tall window tin, I bought it on Etsy a while ago and never had a use for it.

I covered the lid in a picture of fabric once made for Marie Antoinette. The paper was Modge Podged onto the plastic and embellished with gold zig-zag ribbon. (You can see the spot where the pattern is messed up ... the paper ripped while wet so I tried to cover it the best I could)

I mixed gold body glitter with the Modge Podge for the top layer, so, at different angels the picture is more gold.

I absolutely love it. No one I showed was really impressed, but I think it's pretty cool.

By the way, I'm Chelsea. Hi! I rarely ever post. You all make such beautiful things!

sugarcreamcandy, posting in craftgrrl @ 05:12 pm: Flowers made of feathers?

Hi this if my first time posting. Im getting married Oct 31st 2010 and I'm having my dress custom made. I want to make little flowers made of feathers and pearls, and a bit of tulle in varying sizes for embelishment on the top. I really dont trust anyone to carry out my vision of what I want them to look like so I'm going to make them myself. The only problem is, I have no experience with feathers at all and im not really sure how to get it to be stury and set. Is there a setting i put the feathers in or is there a way to sew them together?
I basically want something like in the picture but with pearls as the center not diamonds.
Any information on how to do this, including the best feathers to use would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
